The repatriation of the krater was heralded as a great cultural and political triumph by many governments around the world, particularly Italy. In 2008, after the discovery that it had been looted and illegally acquired, the Euphronios Krater was returned to Italy after spending more than 40 years in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
